I've been reading a book called "Today Matters" for the last year so what does that say about me? Can't believe its been over a month since I've posted. Jumped on Facebook and I barely have time to get on that as well. Good thing I can't access it at work or I might not have a job.

Lots happened over the last month or so - I'm now into my next decade - although from everything I've heard, unless they are just trying to make me feel better, it sounds like the 40s will be fun and will fly by faster than the 30s did.

Also went to Guam - WOW! This picture is from a secluded beach - Haputo Beach - that one of my bosses at work told me about. The picture doesn't do it justice but it gives you a glimpse of its beauty. We also took our goggles and dove down to view the incredible fish - just like the ones you see in the saltwater aquarium. Too Cool!

The house is coming along excellently - Mark is so good at so many things - he got tons done while I was gone. I only contribute in the destruction phase - making things look nice and work correctly is not my forte.

Easter was wonderful too - good friends, good food, good family - Life is Good!

Is there any such thing as truly quick and easy chicken?

OK, so I google-searched a recipe for this and have yet to find one. Maybe I need to search quick and easy chicken recipes that don't require any ingredients other than the chicken . . . . I'm attempting to surprise Mark with lunch and we've got this chicken we need to cook so I thought, how hard can this be? Obviously a bit harder than I thought - I guess I can't cook anything without Parmesan cheese or sour cream - both of which I do not have on hand. Oh wait - I just remembered I have two cookbooks in the cupboard that friends of mine bought for me. There has got to be something in there for chicken. One book is "Cooking for Idiots" and the other is "The Three Ingredient Recipe Cookbook". Yes, my friends know me and they love me :-)

The Joys of Homeownership

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_tJcmTpeguVM/SZCZ6_sxxxI/AAAAAAAAAGM/f2m5wW-IEJA/s400/New+House+09+001.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5300906000225781522" />

I think it is finally sinking in that we've bought a house. The signs are everywhere, especially in our dwindling bank account. This is my first home purchase ever, although I could've probably purchased one with all of the money I've put into renting in the last eighteen years or so. We went to Lowe's one night last week just to pick out lighting for the kitchen - it took a few hours and several hundred dollars before we got what we "think" we want. My friend bought me a magnet once that had the words "I used to be indecisive but now I'm not sure" inscribed on it. Well, that describes me to a tee. Thankfully Mark and I have very similar tastes, and he has built a home before so he knows what he's doing. If I say I like something and he agrees, or vice versa, then we know we're going to be pretty happy with our decisions. The house is unfinished upstairs and we want to make some changes downstairs and to the outside of the house and yard, so we're taking our time and doing a bit at a time. It's kinda fun, but kinda stressful too, and today I get a phone call that the furnace isn't working - not a good sign. Ever the optomist, I point out to Mark that we are going to get a new one anyway eventually because this one is too small to heat the whole house with the unfinished upstairs, but he wants to use this one for his "man cave" in the out building out back and didn't want to have to buy a new one right now. So one of our friends has volunteered to take a look at it for us and hopefully it's just something small and cheap, like the catastrophic converter or something.

I'm still glad we're homeowners though - they're not making land anymore, so at least we've got our own little piece of it.

The Old Barn

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_tJcmTpeguVM/SX368I9EyPI/AAAAAAAAAGE/lWyFxFdN6QY/s320/Old+Barn.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5295664647960316146" />
Not to count my chickens before they hatch, but we're due to close on this house and property very soon. Most of the formalities are out of the way, and we've taken some pictures of the place and are having fun looking at the ways we want to fix it up. This barn is ("they" say) over 100 years old, and it has so much character - it also has some major issues - part of the roof is gone, the floor has caved in and up in the hay mound area something pretty large must be residing due to the size of the "presents" it has left behind. Of course, being the romantic that I am, I really really hope we can save it - Mark does as well, but I think he's a bit more practical than I am. We're hoping to have an Amish crew come up and take a look at it and give us a quote on restoring it. If it's not cost effective, at least we can save some of the old beams and possibly incorporate them into the new barn we hope to build. I'm still hanging on to hopes that this one can be restored - like our friend Stu says, these old barns are a dying breed.

What a New Year

This is gonna be a heck of a year I do believe. If all goes well, Mark and I plan on getting married in October - first thought of going to St Augustine Florida for a small beach wedding and then a big party back here a few weeks later. That is still a possibility, but now we're working on trying to buy a house - it's on 10 acres with a pond and small woods in the back - needs a bit of work - unfinished upstairs, but it's really got character, and an old barn that's about falling down but hopefully salvageable. If we can get the place cleaned up, we might just decided to tie the knot at the homestead. Plus, I turn the big 4-0 this year - that hardly seems possible - seems like I just graduated from high school. And, on the work front, it looks like we'll probably be going back overseas early next year for another 6 to 9 month vacation - joy joy! So, the easily-overwhelemed, procrastinating me has decided to just take it one day at a time and pray every day. Seems to be working pretty well so far :-)

And speaking of praying, wasn't it truly a miracle that all of those people on the US Airways flight survived yesterday - God Is Amazing!

New Year Nausea

Happy New Year! New Year's Eve we stayed close to home but did stay up long enough to ring in 2009 - didn't even crack open the champagne, but I did have a few glasses of wine. Then on New Year's Day we took a drive and relaxed, but then in the evening I got sick as a dog. First thought it might be a touch of food poisoning, because I've been there before, once I did it to myself with tuna helper - ick. But this time I had the chills and body aches something fierce. Just now starting to come out of the funk - just in time to return to work - joy joy. All in all though, it was a very nice Holiday vacation - lots of friends, family, fun and laughs :-)

Merry Christmas!

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_tJcmTpeguVM/SVOt6GNW7CI/AAAAAAAAAF8/-myJZyT9l5g/s200/Winter.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5283758001446382626" />

May you enjoy every moment of the Season with those you love the most!

Ya Gotta Love 10's

Just started ten hour days a few weeks ago, so now I go in at 6am and work til 5 from Monday-Thursday with an hour for lunch - good for dog walking since he needs some relief too in a long day. It has been quite an adjustment, but today is a great reminder of why I think I'm going to like a four day work week. I got to sleep in, been leisurely getting stuff done around the house, and am in the midst of watching "Love Actually". It's nice to just have a whole day, all to myself and then to realize that I've got the whole weekend ahead of me as well.

Think I'm gonna go to the grocery store to get that over with and then pay some bills OR maybe I'll just stay right here on the couch . . . .

Harvey Oaks

Mom invited me to the neatest soiree the other evening at Harvey Oaks Jewelers in Fremont. For some reason I can never get my hyperlinks to come through on my blog but they have a website - www.harveyoaksjeweler.com/. Anyway, they invite customers to this event where basically they have appetizers and wine and it's the only time of year they actually have anything discounted. They also buy their jewelry and place it at fair market value at the time of their purchase. Then if the market goes up, they don't mark up the prices, so that's cool. They also encourage you to make a wish list, and then they keep it on file so that when your husband or family member or friend comes in, they know what type of jewelry you like. This event was for the ladies, and then in two weeks, they have an event for the men so they can see what's on their significant others' wish lists. My mom bought a very pretty gold ring, and the neat thing with it was that stones can be added later or she can wear it as is. The gentleman that waited on us has been with the store for 31 years. He goes to shows and buys the most unique and high quality gems. He spent a lot of time with us, showing us all sorts of gems that you don't see every day, and he explained all about the ones that are more durable or more soft than others. I never realized that emeralds are one of the softest stones so you have to be very careful when wearing them. So, if you're ever in Fremont, check them out. They aren't the most inexpensive of stores, but if you make a purchase there you know you're getting something special.

November Rain

Regrouping from two weeks straight without a day off. Drill was last weekend and it was a long week prior to and since. Yesterday I basically vegged out all day and today I'm playing catch up with all the things I've let slide, including bills and blogs. Mark and I decided to take tomorrow off and the government has graciously given us off Veteran's Day on Tuesday, so it's almost like we've got a mini-vacation. The weather has been a bit dreary but it makes for a nice opportunity to curl up with a good book.

This afternoon is going to be a bit tough though, because Mom and I are attending the funeral of a woman who was like a second Mom to me. I spent many days and weekends at the Mercer household while I was growing up, and now we've got to say goodbye to Mrs. Mercer. She is definitely in a better place where there is no suffering and nothing but peace and joy, and we will see her again someday - that is a comforting thought.

Amish Friendship Bread

Ever make it? Well if you're like me and you don't cook much or hardly at all, the task seems quite daunting. It was actually pretty neat though when I gave it a shot. You get this bag of goo and for like 10 days you do all this stuff to it and on the 10Th day you bake it. It's really good - tastes a lot like coffee cake. Most days all you have to do is mush the bag but a few days you add a few ingredients like milk and flour and sugar. You then split the batter and give it to friends on the 10Th day. It's sorta like a chain letter but with food. I gave mine to the ladies at work and told them I totally understood if they'd want to toss it, but I think most of them were actually gonna make it. You can also add raisins, nuts etc to it to make it even better but I thought I'd just follow the recipe since sometimes that alone is challenging enough for me. All in all though, it was fun to watch the batter ferment and stuff and people actually ate the bread when I took it to work so it couldn't have been that bad. Thanks April for bringing me my bag of goo - it made for an interesting 10 days, and you may just make a cook out of me yet - but don't hold your breath :-)

October Already?

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_tJcmTpeguVM/SPC-8Iq65eI/AAAAAAAAAF0/9f9xGJlgfaM/s200/Summer+2008+052.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5255910705470301666" />
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_tJcmTpeguVM/SPC-vtU3BNI/AAAAAAAAAFs/L6T-riOGMkE/s200/Party+with+the+Band.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5255910491971585234" />
Behind again - much has happened these past three weeks or so - almost all of it has been a lot of fun! It's had its ups - Family reunion at Put in Bay - and downs - had to take Mark to the ER - but all in all, it's been pretty good. Thankfully Mark is doing pretty well, although they are going to do some blood work to see what is going on with him. He's feeling quite a bit better though - Thank God!

Tonight we're having a WXKR radio reunion at Mi Hacienda in Toledo. Can't wait - it's been forever since we've all been together. I'm definitely taking the camera for that one. My friend Jennifer, who is AWESOME at planning these types of events -is making a CD of old pix that we all e-mailed her - that oughta be a hoot.

Thought I'd put a picture from the old radio days on the blog too - partying with the band The Why Store back in the mid-90's - seems like only yesterday!

And of course, I had to post a picture of the wild and crazy Kruse bunch at Casual Cape on Put in Bay - what a neat place and what a great time! Two houses all to ourselves - we're going to try to do this every year from here on out, and thanks to my Mom's cleaning effots, next year we get Thursday evening free! Go Mom!!!

Memories of Summer

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_tJcmTpeguVM/SNZwuEFz4cI/AAAAAAAAAEE/bKp_1Tl8qO0/s200/Lake+Views+4.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5248506352421298626" />
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_tJcmTpeguVM/SNZv969yRiI/AAAAAAAAAD8/k3BtPxPpml8/s200/Lake+Views.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5248505525337998882" />
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_tJcmTpeguVM/SNZv2ZSCdHI/AAAAAAAAAD0/M37I9fg_F8E/s200/Sandy+Smiling.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5248505396037055602" />
Our friends and neighbors, Tom and Emily, have a friend who came in August and took some pictures of their dog Sandy and also of the lake views from our beach. I love it! Thank God Mom has been there all the way to help me with one thing at a time so I don't feel so overwhelmed. Still nailing down the date, but it's definitely going to be next September or October. This is really exciting - never tried on a wedding dress before, so what an experience that was. I had tried on about a dozen before finding this one. I actually passed on it a few times because it didn't look like "me" in the bag, but once I got it on, it fit so perfectly and I just fell in love with it. Plus it was actually comfortable - I never thought a wedding dress could be comfortable but I can see me wearing it easily all evening. My sister is coming in town in a week and a half for a family reunion and I just can't wait to show it to her - she's going to cry, and I might even cry too.

In Check

God always has a way of keeping our egos in check. This morning I went running down at one of my favorite spots down the road from here, and it was such a perfect morning for a run. The sun was out but it wasn't too hot yet, and there was a nice breeze as well. I had run all but about the last quarter mile, and I was thinking here I was running on my day off, feeling good, thinking that I've come a long way since I started doing this regularly almost nine months ago. Then all of a sudden, some young tan girl in a Brandy Chasteen running bra comes running out of Lakefront Marina looking absolutely stunning and running with the greatest of ease. As I was running behind her I just laughed to myself, noting that there's always room for improvement.

In other news, with persistence, God also allows for things that start off rocky to turn out Great. That's what happened yesterday. My Sister was in town for basically only one full day and we were hoping to go waverunning. Unfortunately, everyone and their brother had the same idea around here. We had a heck of a time just getting them around to the beach to fuel them because they were on empty and kept cutting out before we could even get them to the jetty (is it jetty or jeddy? hmmm). Then there were so many people at the beach that we didn't feel comfortable fueling them around all those people, so poor Mark basically had to trek through thick foliage (hopefully not poison ivy-infected) to get around to a more secluded spot for fueling. Once we finally got them fueled, the waves kicked up so it was a bit of a bumpy day for riding, but we ended up having an absolute ball! Then we came back up to the condo and cooked brats and beans and corn on the cob and snacked on veggies and cheese and talked and laughed with the folks too. They even got on the waverunners and rode for a while - I was so proud that they did that, even though it was a bit rough out there. It ended up being just a wonderful and memorable day - a hard one to top!

Hot, Hot Hot

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_tJcmTpeguVM/SLG63ya7dOI/AAAAAAAAADs/lmVNWs9ZrZw/s200/Uncle+Frank,+Missy,+Folks+and+Me.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5238173309198890210" />
Whew - Summer is back with a vengeance. These last few days have been muggy and hot, and we've taken refuge in the cool condo. The dog, poor little black critter that he is, is out and in in a moment as the heat is way too much for him as well. Our neighbor Joan had a fish fry last evening - walleye bites, and they were awesome. We sat around and ate and drank some refreshing Sangria and enjoyed the occasional breezes as they would blow through. Now it is Sunday afternoon again, and I've got that ambivalent feeling I always get as the weekend winds down, wanting to savor every moment of what's left of the weekend and mentally preparing myself for another busy work week. Maybe I'll head out and take a dip in the lake because before we know it, it will be sweater season again.

Oh, and I finally downloaded the picture from when my Uncle Frank (my Mom's little Brother) and my Cousin Missy came through on their way to moving her down to Virginia. She is starting an exciting job at James Madison University tomorrow. She's going to be teaching a history class and getting her Master's Degree there as well - too cool - we're So Proud! We had such a nice time the other day - hadn't seen them in at least five or six years - Uncle Frank lives in North Dakota. It's amazing how time gets away from us, but with family and close friends, it's like we've never been apart!

What a Weekend

This weekend was our FTX (field exercise) at Camp Perry. Each year we spend three days in the field playing war games and honing our skills. It's always a trip - we have chemical attacks, aggressors trying to access our camp, and all sorts of other fun stuff. Well this year, we had our Detachment, a brand new group of Red Horse Personnel from Mansfield, join us. Normally it's hotter than heck and miserable as all get out, but this year, the weather was just perfect. Other than the downpour we experienced on Saturday night, you couldn't ask for anything better. OK, maybe one thing could have been better. If you're going to have over three hundred people playing war games, you might want to locate the porta potties a bit farther away from the dining tent. Needless to say, after three days, even with good weather, when you stood in line for your meals, you always had the pleasant aroma of porta potty wafting through your nasal passages. Maybe this is the Air National Guard's way of helping us to control food portions and stay within fitness standards . . . it sure worked for me!

It's Me or The Dog

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_tJcmTpeguVM/SI-gYm5lToI/AAAAAAAAADk/Wo0I8v3TbVc/s200/Noah+and+Me.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5228574037019807362" />
Victoria Stillwell is coming to America and they are asking for applications on Animal Planet. Is it because those who may actually stumble upon it might think that I'm "weird" or a "religious nut" or a "freak" or something? Hmmm, I never really thought about it all too deeply but in this society of political correctness, I guess I've just conditioned myself to keep it nice and light. Another Hmmm, because life is for sure not always nice and light. As a matter of fact, those things that often prompt me to actually put things in words are the very things which I edit out of much of my posts. Very strange indeed -it's like even on cyberspace I want to present a better me - me without all the bitching and moaning (which I do believe I try to keep to a minimum). But I have truly digressed so far away from what I actually wanted to post this evening.

This is going to be a post about a spiritual moment I had tonight - religious if you will, although I believe religion is getting a bad name right now, especially congregated religion. I'm not entirely sure that some of the bad press concerning this isn't without warrant. People have, throughout the centuries, performed many heinous acts in the name of religion. But again I'm wandering so far away from the subject of my post.

In all the time I've been dating Mark (which is quite a long time - several years in fact) we've always walked the beach and he's been exceptional at finding "lucky stones". I know I will probably botch what exactly a lucky stone is, but I'm afraid to clarify with him at this point because it will once again prove that I'm not always paying complete attention to his stories. My explanation (again, probably very flawed) is that lucky stones are cheek bones from fish - I want to say walleye or perch - that wash upon the shore. They have a signature "L" groove in them, which I'm guessing stands for "lucky". So, on with my story. For the past 7 years or so, each time we go walking, or I even go walking by myself on the beach, I have never, never never found one. Not even close - never ever. Mark seems to find one at least every few trips to the beach. Now mind you, he's had an eye for these "lucky stones" since he was very small and I have only relatively recently been hunting them myself. Oh - I explain way too much - but anyway - tonight I walked down to the beach with the dog - all by myself, and I was talking to God and said, I'd really, really like to find a lucky stone tonight (now I've said this to Mark and to others and to myself before but it never has happened in all this time). I swear to God (no pun intended) that five seconds after I said that, I found the biggest lucky stone I've ever seen - right there on the beach, and right next to the picnic table I was going to sit down on. It was SO obvious - God said "You asked, and I was listening" -it was the neatest thing I've experienced in a long long time. I absolutely knew that this was no coincidence. It was an affirmation that God is here, that he's listening in the present, that it's just as easy to believe in all the good possibilities as it is to be bogged down by all the sins of the world. Maybe I just need to spend more time talking and listening and seeing what God has to show me and spend less time on pitying "poor me" for some of the things that life deals. Life isn't fair - we are to go through this life being the best that we can be and our true reward will be when we meet God face to face in heaven. The best thing we can be in this life is a good example of God's love and that will help us through the rough spots and help us to appreciate the good spots - and there are many many good spots - spots such as tonight where a small white "stone" with a grooved "L" helped me again to renew my faith in the One above . . . .

Ups and Downs

The last day of vacation. It had its bumps - we ended up going to two funerals - one for a dear friend and former boss and one for a dear friend's Mom. They were both somewhat expected yet they came too fast, and the finality of it always weighs so heavy on your heart even as you know they are in a far better place.

There were also some very nice high points in this workless week. I've always been a night person and being able to stay up late and sleep in each morning made this vacation worthwhile even if we hadn't done anything else. I guess some people might think we didn't do much of anything else this week, but we truly enjoyed the peace and quiet and calm of not "having" to do anything. We went shopping. Mark cooked excellent food and I even made some seafood pasta salad - thanks for the recipe Miss Shelly - it ROCKED! We also got the waverunners out and are hoping to run them in the evenings after work and on weekends for the rest of the summer when we don't have drill.

Today we are meeting the folks at Cleats (the old Nate's Restaurant here in Port Clinton). If they aren't too busy that's where we'll be having an early dinner this evening. It'll be great to see them because it's been a few weeks.

Time to go walk the dog - he's got a "gentle leader" which he hates, but it's supposed to keep him from jumping and lunging at poor suspecting folks. He's managed to get it off from around his muzzle a few times now, but I think he's getting more used to it. He's definitely used to the treats I've been giving him as I encourage him that yes this is a good thing - don't think either of us are convinced of that - hehe.

Red White and Blue

Happy belated 4th of July - what a weekend! That is what I wake up to on the weekends. Mark loves to make breakfast and it's a treat that we never have time for during the week. I almost love the smell of bacon more than the taste, although a few nice chewy pieces always go excellently with my scrambled eggs. Mark prefers his bacon a little more crunchy so he makes some of each - yum!

Another work week has made it into the history books and for some reason this one went really slow. I think it's because it was the last full week before my vacation. We have the 4th off and we're taking the 7th through the 11th off, so it's four more days 'til I can put the uniform in the closet for a while and be a total slouch if I want to.

Last weekend we went to Novelty, Ohio for a beautiful wedding of two people we are in the service with. Andrea Salway and Jason Benson are now Andrea and Jason Benson. I got some great ideas for when we finally take the plunge. The service was in a gazebo - gorgeous, and it was romantic and meaningful while at the same time not taking more than 15 minutes. Mark and I both liked that idea a lot! The reception was also a blast, and Mark actually asked me to dance twice, and he's not usually really big on that type of stuff. We just really had the best time!

They say it might rain today, but it sure looks nice out now, so I think we'll take advantage of it while we can. Maybe Mark will take me for another ride in his little red corvette - I've always been a Ford girl, but I must admit, that's one Chevy I've definitely fallen in love with!

Happy Dad's Day

Looks like it's going to be a perfect day to celebrate with Dad. Happy Father's Day to all Dads out there! Didn't have a clue what to get mine, although he always says, "don't get me anything - just spending time with you is all I want". Mom says the same thing, but I always like to get them a little something anyway - they've done so much for me my whole life. Mark came up with a good idea though - he had purchased several pounds of fresh lake Erie yellow perch so our freezer is packed full. So, I'm taking Dad a twelve-pack of Miller Lite and some freshly frozen lake Erie perch - I think it'll beat the goofy ties I used to get him as a kid . . . .

Credit Card Woes

I try to be a nice person. Really I do. But I'm so mad right now that I can't even type right. I totally unloaded on some poor unsuspecting Bank of America Customer service guy but I've had it up to here! I knew about a month ago that I was charged twice for my "dog in my suitcase" payment when I took Noah to Charlotte. I tried to remedy it then, but each time I talked to the customer service people there, I kept getting cut off - after there was no 1-800 number I could find nor someone actually in customer service. Tonight when I finally received my BOA statement, they had the number for the Charlotte NC Summerfield Suites I stayed at. Anyone who knows me (I would hope) knows that I try to give everyone the benefit of the doubt, but "they" caught me after a particularly bad day and a few glasses of wine on an empty stomach. Supposedly now, after 1 hour with two different customer service reps from both BOA and Summerfield Suites, I "should" be credited - Miss Kruse. We'll see! I hate to go Medieval on people's butts - normally it pains me more than them - but I've been a loyal customer to BOA, oh wait, MBNA, for 15 years. I guess I should feel totally assured after losing basically an hour of my life that I will NEVER get back, that all is well. I've been assured that before - and it pains me tremendously to think that all will one day become online - that's why I don't like online bill paying, even online room reservation, because this all stems from never having talked to someone who I can actually say, "and what is your name, and how can I reach you?". UGH! I swear to God, and I'm trying not to swear so much these days, if there is still an extra charge beyond the already outrageous price I paid for a less than "comfortable" room, you will hear my screams from miles away as they take me to the loony bin . . . . Thanks for listening - I strangely feel somehow better now :-)

Memorial Day Memories

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_tJcmTpeguVM/SDtRixVuCaI/AAAAAAAAADc/DzMMZ7JF_Hk/s200/Sun+has+set+2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5204843452158577058" />
Today actually turned out to be a pretty nice day - after the early morning rain, it warmed up nicely and I'm actually sweating as I type this. The AC is off and Mark made some chili so the place is pretty toasty. I was glad that the rain held off for the Memorial Day Parades and Ceremonies - it's a really important tradition that I'm glad hasn't gotten totally lost in the commercial-ness of the world today. Not that I mind the cook-outs and beach parties and all of that - that is really cool as well, but it's also important to remember those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for the freedoms we all enjoy. It's like Easter - love the chocolate bunnies and colored eggs, but I need to stop to recognize the true gift God gave of his Son to give us our eternal freedom!

It's been another busy month and I can't believe (well actually with my track record I CAN believe) that I haven't posted since early May. Mother's Day was really nice -we actually went to Blackberry Corners, which is not a usual Mother's Day place that we go to, but it was yummy! And the place was packed - looks like others had the same idea we did.

Last Saturday some of us from our old Supply Warehouse Days at Camp Perry (like 12 years ago) got together to visit our former boss. We had a ball telling stories and showing pictures and generally reminiscing.

My Sister had to have surgery on her birthday - doesn't that bite? Thankfully everything went well and she is home from the hospital. My folks went to Florida to visit and help take care of her for a few days. I wished I could've gone as well, but I might try to visit in a month or so when she's able to be up and around before she goes back to work. Mark and I mowed the folks' place yesterday and wow - I forgot what a chore mowing can be. The weather was so nice though, so it was actually a perfect day for it. I just can't believe that the folks still do it and do it so well - Dad's mowing lines are arrow straight - my lines are crooked as heck and I swear I hadn't been drinking!

I had to post a picture just for grins and tickles - this is one I took near Tucson when we were there last month. The picture doesn't even do it justice, but it's pretty neat just the same.

Time to walk the dog and then get ready for bed - another interesting day lies ahead at work tomorrow.

I really am still alive

Can't believe it's been over a month since I've posted. I have been back for a few weeks now, but there's been such a hodgepodge of funny things going on that I've been falling into bed each night saying I've got to get on my blog. Now I'm waiting for my uniform to dry so that I can iron it for tomorrow's big meeting and I finally thought that this will be the perfect time to post. The Arizona trip was a blast - I'm going to try to post a few pix from it - simply beautiful out there. The following weekend we ended up going to Charlotte, North Carolina, and back, in two days, with a truck full of people - what a hoot. Then last weekend was drill and that is always a ton of fun and activity. Today is the first day in over a month that I've taken time to slow down and breathe. It's been a heck of a ride but I can't complain a bit. Life is good - hectic and stressful - but good!

Slackin' Again

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_tJcmTpeguVM/R_TkjqR89OI/AAAAAAAAADU/d3Xyb56FIZA/s200/Desert+-+GalleryPlayer.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5185020372306425058" />
What is it with my continued sporadic posting? Work has been extra-special busy lately and I've been taking a taped course as well at home after work so it just seems that I have less and less time. I have great respect for families with two jobs, children, pets and college classes - I truly don't know how they do it. I can barely keep up with one job, one fiance and one dog. I'm not complaining though - life is good and there is never a dull moment for sure.

I took today off for my birfday - we're meeting the folks for an early dinner at Biaggi's in Levis Commons today - can't wait! I'm also going to be offline for a few weeks - making a run for the border as part of Operation Jump Start - our unit is building roads along the border fence. We'll be in Arizona at the perfect time of year - nice and warm but not Africa hot.

Thank God we're starting to see the sun again and seeing some warming of the weather - I absolutley love snow but I must admit I'm ready for spring for sure. Mom and Noah and I went for a walk last Sunday in hopes of soaking up some spring weather but instead we encountered muddy walking trails and rain, but we had such fun. At one point we had to traverse a "river" - we took big branches and put them down to make a bridge of sorts - we ended up wet and cold and muddy - the dog looked like a junk yard dog but we laughed and laughed and realized that we still had quite the sense of adventure left in us - too bad we didn't take some pictures - what a memorable day!

I'm hoping to be able to post while I'm gone but knowing me and knowing the fast-paced deployments we have I'm not sure it will be possible. When I return I'll hafta describe this latest adventure. I've been to Arizona before but never for this type of work. I guess there's an Ostrich Farm - Rooster Cogburn's Ostrich Farm - somewhere around where we'll be so maybe I can check it out too . . . . the excitement never ends

He Is Risen

Happy Easter! The snow is slowly melting but we got a "punch" Friday night. It was some heavy stuff too but it sure was pretty! I remember a few Easters in my lifetime where it snowed and I remember a few where it was almost hot. Either way, the ham is in the oven and the house smells great - Yum Yum!

It was another busy week but last weekend was great! Last Sunday we went to see Mark's daughter Heather at BGSU - we had lunch at EasyStreet Cafe. I LOVE that place! We used to go there all the time when I went to BG and it was like returning home. Heather showed us her apartment - very nice - and she seems to be really enjoying school. I can't believe she's almost done with her first year already!

Mark and I then headed over to Levis Commons in Perrysburg to meet up with Mom and my niece Staci. She had surprised us by flying in on Friday to spend the weekend with the Folks. We met at Books A Million - love that place too! Then we went to Johnny Rockets for an early dinner. Yep, we did a lot of eating that day - that always makes me happy!

No Fake

I've been trying to post for at least a week - I don't know if it's something with my service at the house or blogger or Google or what, but I've had a helluva time even getting to the sign in page. Been meaning to post about so many things but now I'm at a loss because I'm stunned that I actually got on to post. As always, many things are going on, especially with work, but overall, all is well. Can you believe last Tuesday's ice storm and then the almost blizzard on Saturday? Too Cool! We went to the Country Keg in Graytown on Sunday and they were packed with sleds - made me homesick to ride again.

Now that I'm finally on to post, I'm finding myself too tired and lazy to say anything of importance. Actually, I've very rarely said anything of real importance on this thing. I just like to "hear" myself ramble I guess. If I'm not too lazy tomorrow I might just post about this germ fear issue I've been having - betcha can't wait for that!

Pray for me - gotta go to the dentist in the am - I've got a really great dentist but I've got something wrong with a filling, I think, and I've never gone to this guy for anything other than a cleaning. Thankfully I've not had a cavity in several years. I'm a little nervous about the visit. It was such a lovely surprise for Valentine's Day because Mark was out of town in another time zone - Guam - where it's actually almost tomorrow already - and I just thought that with him being so busy there that he might have forgotten the big day. Since he did such an excellent job over Christmas I figured he'd get a couple of freebies if he forgot a holiday or two for a while. But he didn't forgot - he did an awesome job! Yeah, that's it. But on the flip side I at least didn't gain any and have to pay money. However, I did learn that as we go if we gain weight from the previous weigh in, we still hafta pay - I was under the false hope that as long as we didn't go over our initial weigh in, we wouldn't have to fork over any dough. This really is going to be a challenge. It has been fun though and my team won the overall most weight lost and most % lost so we're on FIRE - thanks Sam - he was our biggest team loser overall - he ROCKS! So after two weeks, the "E" team is the BOMB! We need to have an "E" team nickname - "E" for Exceptional - or Elephants - or Expedient - or --- maybe something better will come to us if we put our heads together . . . .

We played volleyball for an hour or so on Friday and I have to admit, not only am I out of shape, but I think I've become a bit of a wussy. I was whining about every little ache and pain but I swear there for a moment that I sprained my wrist or something - it's sore as heck, along with the rest of my body. I could hardly get out of bed yesterday. Gettin' old sucks! Hopefully I can turn it all around and end up feeling 18 again if I can keep up the exercise and start eating better. I think that's going to be my biggest challenge - I just love food, and beer, and wine and desserts . . . . Moderation is the key, though - like two Hershey kisses instead of two bags . . . .

I LOVE FOOD

We're doing this Biggest Loser thing at work and actually it's given me a kick in the pants to try to get back in shape in 08 BUT it seems that the more I'm supposed to be watching what I eat, the more I want to eat . . . my subconscious is feeling all starved or something and it's getting an attitude. I'm doing ok with the workout routine a few times a week although I need to step it up a bit - walking on the treadmill at 1.9mph and 0% grade while watching a movie isn't exactly working up a sweat :-).

But it's the food - I'm constantly thinking about it. Plus, I've been out to eat twice this week - once to The Garden for Dad's Birthday on Thursday - Happy Birthday Dad! - and once to Red Lobster - last night at 9:30pm after going to the mall to have my ring sized. It sure was good though - both times. I had the Salmon Rockefeller at The Garden and I skipped the garlic mashed potatoes with gravy and instead had the oriental vegetables which were excellent as well. Couldn't entirely pass up desert so I had coffee with Bailey's - yum yum! Last night I had the broiled seafood platter - but desert was a daiquiri. I'm really sacrificing here ---it's just kinda funny because the more I think about what I'm putting into my mouth, the more I put into my mouth. We have our first weigh in on Friday and we have to pay a buck a pound for each pound we've gained since our initial weigh in a few weeks ago. Hope I don't have to cough up $10.

The Ring

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_tJcmTpeguVM/R4owBmh_heI/AAAAAAAAACc/0KgRc__u3BU/s320/My+Ring" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5154985527560078818" />

We still need to have it sized but I don't want to give it up for a few days - right now I've got a ring sizer on it so I've at least got it on the right finger :-)

I'm usually very low key about fashion and jewelry and stuff - I need to be on What Not to Wear - but I look at this ring each day and think it's the most beautiful ring in the world - I couldn't have imagined anything better and feel totally thankful for a guy who knows me so well and loves me enough to stick with me the rest of our lives . . . . It was a wonderful, wonderful Christmas and New Year's Eve! My Sister Lisa surprised us with a visit and we went to our watering hole - the Wharf Lounge - and on to the Port Clinton Fish Flop as my buddy Crosser likes to call it. It was our first time - too funny! Then we stopped into the VFW for a cocktail and headed back home. Lisa came to see . . . my engagement ring! Yep, I can't believe it - I'm engaged! It's the most beautiful thing I've EVER seen - Mark did an awesome job picking it out all by himself. You should see the diamond earrings that go along with it - WOW!

I won't go into all the details of the proposal here because I couldn't describe it in a way that would do it justice - it was just so magical, and mere words would be woefully inadequate - suffice it to say that I was floored and am still on cloud 9! We've got no date set yet, and with the two of us procrastinators, we might get hitched by 2020 - just kidding Mom - I'm guessing it'll be maybe this fall or next spring - we'll see - I just can't believe it - I've got a great guy and I'm a very lucky girl!

Other than that, we're trying to get back into the swing of working all week each week again and we had drill this past weekend, so our butts are draggin' already today and we've got four more days to go . . . although depending upon the goodness or the badness of the BCS Championship Game tonight, I might just hafta take tomorrow off - bosses are out of town and I've got plenty of leave on the books so we'll just wait and see.

GO BUCKS!!!!

Last Minute Shopping

Mark and I braved the shops yesterday - gheesh - the traffic was almost worse than the stores . . . we had fun though and stopped at Cheers in the Sandusky mall for a frosty beverage before returning to Port Clinton. This occurred at what we called Motel 6 - some of our dorms in Iraq. The incoming mortar did not explode on impact - God was on our side thankfully. No one was hit or hurt when they lobbed it in. The EOD - Explosive Ordinance Demolition guys - did a great job of safely detonating this and used plenty of explosives to do it. It did break a window and blow open a few steel doors. Come on snow - I want to be snowed in with a good book for a day or two! Walked the dog down by the river and about froze my booty off - it wore us both out. I've gotta do something though - I was in denial about any possible weight gain until I tried to put on my military dress blues for our Christmas drill last Saturday - those suckers must've shrunk a few sizes in my closet this year. Then, to add insult to injury, I put a pair of jeans on that I thought were my "usual" size. They were pretty tight but I thought it's all good - I'll just exercise a little and work off a few pounds. When I took them off I realized that they were my "fat pants" - ugh - my fat pants are tight (SIGH).

Happy Day and the Flute

Yesterday we had the nicest time - it was Mom's birthday and we celebrated it in town at the Irish Pub. We had appetizers, drinks and excellent conversation. I won't say how old Mom is but she sure doesn't look her age - not that that age is old to begin with . . . . I'll quit while I'm ahead on that one :-)

Today as I was changing out of my well-loved but too well worn combat boots and uniform and into my large comfy sweater and too tight pants (sigh) I noticed my flute up on the shelf in my closet. I've not had that out in quite a long time so I put it together to see if I could still carry a tune (but really to see if it would mess with the dog - no wonder he's so ornery). I couldn't tell you where any sheet music is - what I once had would probably be too old and yellow to even read anymore - but I belted out a few Christmas tunes on it and the flute part from "Nights in White Satin" - probably the flutists answer to "Stairway to Heaven" for rockers. The dog's ears perked up and down, he barked once, but he never cried. He was more curious than anything. So after I'd had my fun I took my flute apart and cleaned it and the strangest thought occurred to me. I realized that never in a million years when I would clean my flute in 5th and 6th grade did I ever imagine that over 25 years later I'd clean my rifle in much the same way. It was really the most surreal feeling. Cleaning the flute involves running a metal "stick" - for lack of a better word - with a cloth attached through a loop in the end of the stick - down the length of the inside to soak up all the spit. In much the same way, we use "sticks" with barrel cleaning cloths to pick up the carbon in the barrel of our M16s - well now M4s. I was repeating the same routine I'd done all those years ago, although the "instruments" are used for widely different things. One is used to make beautiful music and the other to protect me and kill the enemy if the need ever arose. It probably sounds corny and stupid, but both of those instruments mean very much to me in a way I can't quite explain and cleaning them is a labor of love. I cannot believe it took me until today to make that connection after all these years.

Another Pain the Butt Cold

Seems like I just got over a cold and here came another one. I left work early Thursday and didn't even go in on Friday. And I think I bruised a kidney or something from coughing so hard. We had our military drill weekend party yesterday with 500 people packed into our gym. Actually it was a really nice time - hopefully I didn't spread around my sickness to everyone in the room. I noticed that I wasn't the only one with a bright red nose and nasty cough - tis the season!

And, I've got a major breakout of what the dermatologist insists is contact dermatitis - what the heck did I contact? I've been using the same stuff and doing the same routine as always, but now I've got a rash on my arms and on my legs - joy joy! But other than that, I feel Great!

Time to iron the uniforms and prepare for another week of work - I love the weekends but sure dread Mondays . . . .

Can't believe it

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_tJcmTpeguVM/R1Xg3NanO1I/AAAAAAAAACM/nTaC94wxpvw/s320/LaurieDoll.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5140261788812000082" />

I found a Laurie Doll picture that I'd taken last year but forgotten to post. This is where the name of this blog came from. Grant had named my blog when he got me hooked on blogging back when I was in Iraq. The name came from this creation - yes, a real, not exactly live, Laurie Doll - it truly is a face only a mother could love, but I love it wholeheartedly. Can you believe she was created over 20 years ago? Yep, and she's one of only a few in the entire world. I'm so lucky to have her!

December Already?

and I'm definitely not ready for Christmas yet, although after a trip to Seagate to see Trans Siberian Orchestra I'm beginning to get in the spirit just a little bit. And I was tickled to see the snow last evening - before I almost fell on my butt taking the dog for a walk in the freezing rain. TSO was AWESOME - every bit as good as when we saw them in Cleveland. This time though, we were only about 11 rows back - far right, but still could see them really well. Everything was spectacular - as Mary Beth from the River said when she introduced them - it was Total Sensory Overload . . . . the drum solo ROCKED - had to put my head down a bit though for fear of a seizure from the bright white lights rolling around about a million miles an hour.

Mark's big birthday was a few Mondays ago, but he wasn't feeling well so we kept it pretty low key. I did decorate his office with a few streamers, a sign and some confetti - he was surprised - I totally didn't know what to get him for his birthday, so I got him a year's subscription to the Port Clinton News Herald --- I know, I know, I'm such a romantic devil :-)

Thanksgiving was delicious - Brandon and Heather came over and Mark cooked a big dinner, turkey, ham, stuffing, green bean casserole, his awesome sweet potatoes, biscuits, cranberry sauce, pumpkin pie - oh, and I made deviled eggs - yep - they turned out pretty good if I may say so myself. It's so cool to have a boyfriend who loves to cook and is so good at it - especially because if it were up to me, we'd have a Charlie Brown Thanksgiving!

Pure Joy

I'm probably a freak for saying this but one of the funniest, most athletic things I do anymore is play hide and seek with my dog. It never ceases to amuse the heck out of me. Again tonite I come home and do as that goofy commercial does and call for my dog - what does that guy say? Mr. Barky Von Schnauzer? or something like that . . . . while I admit Noah's name isn't quite that "obnoxious", I do feel that he's somewhat confused because Noah sounds a lot like NO and then a sigh or something. Anyway, I call for him and then we chase each other around the condo for about 15 minutes (I'm sure the neighbors LOVE US). It just tickles the crap outta me because he's so smart. He'll hide under the bed when I get too close, which is perfect, because he won't come out until he hears me thunder down the hall or down the steps. Well tonite I fooled him. I quietly (which for those who actually know me will find hard to believe - I am not a quiet person in the least) sat on the bed 'til I caught my breath (which took a while cuz I'm so outta shape). Then I ever-so-slowly and stealthily snuck my way to the bathroom. Now I've hidden behind the bathroom door before, but tonite I was truly on a roll ---- I hid behind the shower curtain in the tub (got my socks soaking wet but it was worth it). Then I "pitter patted" with my hand on the wall to lure my 4-legged friend out from under the bed. He took the bait and went galloping down the hall and down the steps. He quickly realized that he'd been outsmarted and came back into the bathroom and looked behind the door ---- I could've perhaps kept the game going, but I laughed so hard when I saw his face peering behind that door, that I unfortunately gave up my hideout when he heard the giggling from behind the curtain. He smiled (I swear he really does) and we rested for a minute or so, and I realized, yes, that is pure joy!

Football, Freedom and Honor

Is today a perfect day for watching the pigskin fly or what? Fall really is one of my favorite times of the year and this has been no exception, but I tell ya what - when it rains it pours. I won't be depressing with all of the details but suffice it to say that this past month has once again been challenging with friends and family in the hospital, friends and family passing away suddenly, cold and the flu for me (I know, I'm a whiner - I admit - I don't do "sick" well - hahaha - that's funny sick well) anyway, it's been difficult to post when I've been so down. I know though that I've always got a lot to be thankful for, and even in the midst of all of this, I know, truly know, that that is the case. So, with that said, Happy November - let's enjoy what's left of those beautiful leaves on the trees, and may this be a happy and healthy month for all (and a month of more posts for me) :-)

Talk about Neglect

Whoa - can't believe it's been darn near a month since I've published. Guess I've been preoccupied with a lot of stuff at work and home. Again, so much has happened yet I've been too tired and lazy to post about it I guess. Thanks Kim, for posting on my blog - I just apologize that it's taken me this long to check back in.

I've been meaning to tell the story of the found puppy - Conrad. A little wiener dog - so cute - he'd become lost back where I always walk Noah, down by the old Port-age. I felt so bad for the guy that was looking for him that I said a quick prayer that we'd find him, and lo and behold, we did. Noah didn't know what to think of this tiny black, wet, whimpering puppy, but he treated Conrad well - I think he knew he was scared. The reunion with Conrad's "Daddy" was priceless. It turned out to be a really cool evening.

Another cool thing this past month - my Sister came to visit. Guess where we took her? Yep, Kelley's Island - another wonderful experience - it was a Monday, off-season, quiet, fun and peaceful. Plus I tasted the best lobster chowder I've ever had --- actually it was the only lobster chowder I've ever had, but YUMMY! I'll be back to The Pump to have some more of that in the future. And the World Famous Brandy Alexanders were scrumptious --- we could've gotten ourselves into trouble with a couple of pitchers of those . . . good thing we only had one. I have to break down and move from dial up. Don't laugh - I just hate change, but this is getting ridiculous. A two minute you tube video takes an hour to download - I can't take it anymore! By the time I got to this page, I forgot what I was gonna post about - curses - oh, I was going to upload a killer picture but that would take 'til Wednesday so instead I'll just complain about something . . . . I'm so tired now that I'm even too tired to complain - that's bad.

Well, I could complain because it's Monday, but actually it was a kinda nice one. Some of the big wigs were outta town so it was quiet. Plus, I made it to day one of my turning over a new leaf and trying to get up earlier to take more time for myself in the morning. It was great except I forgot my hat - thankfully Mark brought it in with him. The dog was even surprised that I wasn't rushing him through his "business". We'll see what tomorrow brings.

It was a good weekend - plus we had Thursday and Friday off so it was a nice long one. Spent Saturday with the folks and had a nice shopping excursion and an excellent lunch. We all tried red snapper for the first time - Loved It!

Wonder how long it will take this post to actually post???

Killer Camping Trip

I survived the field exercise but basically slept this past weekend away. Twelve days straight in Air Force mode was a bit much, but at least it didn't really rain much. I can handle being hot or cold but I hate working in wet uniforms, sleeping in a wet cot, wearing wet boots etc.

Friday night was fun though. The cops came to the old watering hole. It was kind of ironic, because I had just told friends of mine earlier that evening that even if it looks a bit scary on the outside, the Wharf Lounge is a great place with cold and cheap beer and lots of fun characters - it really is. Well, while my friends were on their way back from Put In Bay to meet us for a drink, I had to text them that if they saw cops to keep on going - too funny. There was just a bit of a squabble but no blood was shed - Thank God - we're lovers, not fighters :-) Had to have a shot of tequila to round the night out - it was a trip!

I'm hoping to take a few days off this weekend if the weather warms up and dries up. The wave runners haven't even been in the water yet - if I don't take a few days off, I'm afraid they won't make it to the water.

All is well for the most part, but my Mom's not been feeling well lately. They're trying to get her blood pressure medicine figured out but it's been making her nauseous and weak - that really worries me, because my Mom never stays sick for long - she always bounces right back. I guess you never realize how much to be thankful for for both your health and the health of those you love until sickness comes into your life. I'm going to go visit in a day or two when her strength is up a bit. I'll take my little four legged friend - he always has a way of cheering the whole family up.

Hey, can you believe it's almost September? Bring on the Bears!!!!!

Gheesh

It's been for-like-ever since I've posted. I didn't even realize just how long until I came up here to pack for our 3 days of war games and walked by the computer. Actually I was looking for an excuse to put off packing - I HATE PACKING - especially when I've got to pack military stuff, civilian toiletries and stuff, flashlights, gerbers, yadayadayada for three days of fun and sun. Actually it looks like it is supposed to be a pretty good weekend. One time we did one of these three day deals in May and we all came out of our tents in the morning and there was snow on the ground - yep - that was a hoot!

Lots of stuff has been going on lately - too much to mention - but all in all things have been chugging right along. The summer has flown by and I haven't done much in the way of vacation type things. We finally have the waverunners here at the condo but still haven't had a chance to put them in the water. Maybe after the end of next week we'll be able to take off a few days and actually get away from work. I feel like I've been eating and sleeping it here lately.

S'pose I should go pack now and get a good night's sleep if possible since the next two will be spent in a big moldy stinky tent with 11 other girls on old cots that are falling apart with extreme cold weather sleeping bags - I swear I don't remember this in the Air Force brochures, but it's a fun bonding time none-the-less. Green eggs for breakfast anyone?

On a Lighter Note

Went to Kelley's Island with Mom and Staci on Monday - too cool - too much fun! My Dad called last weekend and left a message on my phone. I knew right away something wasn't right. When I called back he told me my Aunt had passed away. It was so sudden that I couldn't grasp the whole thing. She hadn't ever been seriously sick that I could ever remember. She was always the rock that held everyone together. They live in North Dakota and we weren't able to make it to the memorial service, but I'm going to try to go with my folks to visit my Uncle and the rest of the family before the summer is over. I haven't seen them in far too long, but I have wonderful memories. My Aunt would write me often when I was in Iraq, telling stories of what was going on with the kids and grandkids, telling funny stories of the Kruse and Ingram Luck - or lack thereof. She is a woman full of more faith than just about anyone I know - that's a comfort. She would want us to celebrate life and look forward to the time when we'll all be together again. I'm trying very hard to do just that. My niece Staci is in town and I took Monday off of work, so I'm looking forward to spending some time with family this weekend. I love you Aunt Carol - you will be missed more than you could ever know!

Still A Lot to Be Thankful For . . .

. . . The whole blogging thing seems so insignificant when life throws a curve ball. We lost a great friend the other day and it still hasn't sunk in for me. Is it even proper or appropriate to write about such a loss? I don't know, but I do know that I can't think about anything else for a while. It seems so tragic - he was too young. He was one of the good guys. But what I love about him absolutely so much is his sense of humor and love of fun. He wouldn't want us all moping around - he'd want us to have a few drinks and remember the good times. And there were A LOT of good times! I will never forget when we went to the Browns game and he shoved an entire six pack of beer down my coat sleeves - I couldn't put my arms down - just like Randy on A Christmas Story . . . what a blast!

Trying to be ever the optimist is not always easy, especially in a situation like this. But I'm thankful that we had the time we did with him. I'm thankful he is in heaven and at peace.

I will never forget you Denny - thank you for your Friendship - I will see you again!

Tick Tock

Why do the weekends fly by so fast? I told Mark yesterday as we hung out watching TV and eating steaks from the grill that I could really handle retirement --- is that pathetic or what? That I'm looking forward to being retired already? It seems that so much happens during the week, that so much of work is rush, rush rush, that by the time the weekend comes, I am physically and mentally exhausted. I spend the entire weekend catching up on rest and home chores and then before I know it, it's time to go back to work again. Especially in the summer with all of its celebrations and events, time whizzes right by.

Today on the history channel they are talking about Armageddon, the Antichrist, the possible end of the world in 2012 --- even though I'm a believer, I still get a bit nervous when thinking about the end of the world. I know since time began that people thought the end was near. I know that I am saved, but why does the devil sometimes sneak in and make me wonder if I'll be "Left Behind" - guess that's when faith takes a coffee break or something. If the end really is so very near, then I need to try not to waste this time that flies by so fast . . . and I do waste time a lot ---too much sleep, too much beer, too much worry --- moderation in all things and the awareness of how short life is needs be my focus now.

Not only that, but I'm working on a better appreciation of the small things in life - the beauty of the road down by the river where I walk or run with the dog each day -the melodies of the birds as they keep me company on my mile long journey - the warmth of the sun on my face as my breath becomes ragged from pushing my heart and lungs further than they've been pushed in a year or two - and the unexpected gifts that come from situations I'd never expected -a new friendship begun this week as I struggle at work to improve on my efficiency at my job. Before Selina came I was so worried that she would look at all I've got on my plate and tell me there's no way I can bring it all together. Instead she taught me to eat this elephant one bite at a time. She was compassionate to my situation and yet gave me tools to improve and eventually conquer these challenges that are present in my current career. She didn't judge - she encouraged - and that's just what I needed.

So I guess my thought of the day is: moderation in all things, look for the simple gifts and never take time for granted . . . wow, that's pretty deep for me :-)

Groovin'

Kelley's turned out great - what a fun time we had! The weather was just about ideal. We drove a golf cart all around the island all day, stopped at the winery for cheese and beverages and ate at the Captain's Corner. We also checked out the Glacier Grooves - didn't even know they were there . . . I know, I know, world famous grooves due to their size and accessibility and I didn't even know they were there. Here are the parental units at the grooves - it was a wee bit hot after the climb so they are looking really thrilled - but seriously, it ended up being very educational and quite interesting. http://www.kelleysislandnature.com/kelleys_island/about_kelleys.htm

It's been quite the busy week thus far. I've got a Master Sergeant here from the Kansas Air National Guard, Selina, and she's been helping me all week to prepare for this big inspection we're having in July. She's been a Godsend and I wish she could stay for a month to help me get everything in tip top shape - we've been working some long hours, but we're going to try to get out on time tomorrow and I can't decide where to take her out to dinner. We ate at Phil's Inn for lunch yesterday because she loves Italian, but I'm wondering if I should take her to Margaritaville's for something different - that's not a bad idea - "if" she likes Mexican.

Trying to get back into shape again and realizing that the longer I put it off the more it hurts. Ran about a mile after work tonight and it was quite relaxing - I probably won't be able to get out of bed in the am, but it was fun at the time.

Time for some dinner and perhaps a glass of vino . . .

Weird Week

This week was, well, weird. There were some high highs and low lows, but overall it ended up being kinda neat. I was exhausted after drill, overslept and was late on Thursday for work and had a multitude of issues come up at Camp Perry, but other than that I also took a last-minute trip to Put In Bay on Thursday evening and spent a nice few hours with our friends Patrick and Jane at our favorite place, the Ole Wharf Lounge, last night. Mark had to take a quick trip to Montana for work but returned last night around 7pm. Even though he was only gone for a few days, it was nice to have him back.

I'm looking forward to Father's Day tomorrow - hopefully it won't rain because we're going to attempt to head to Kelley's Island. Mom and Dad say they haven't been there, but I swore we went once when I was young and rode bikes around the island, but maybe it was Put In Bay that we did that. At any rate, it's been a long, long time for them - maybe never - so we're going to check it out if the weather holds. I'm taking my camera and hoping to get some good pictures.

I thought I'd post a few from the other night at the Bay - Tracy, Craig, Bob and Greg - all friends from work, went with me and it was great - not too crowded, no cover charge at the Round House, Paradise Island singing awesome jams and ice cold beers and margaritas. Smooth sailing on the Jet Express too - I'm really glad I went!

Mistaken

Well, I hate to admit it, but I was wrong - actually I am wrong so often but this is a cool mistake. I went to the dentist last week, and he looked and looked but said I didn't have a cavity. Here it was only a really embedded popcorn kernel. On one hand I felt like a wussy because I couldn't believe that a popcorn kernel could cause so much pain - on the other hand, I was tickled pink that it wasn't a cavity.

And the other pain in my arse, drill weekend, actually went well too. With a portion of the unit deployed, it was kind of a calm and quiet drill weekend.

The weather has been good, I've been good, and I bought a 1/2 gallon of tofts peanut butter cup ice cream, so I guess I really have nothing to complain about . . . I have a really great dentist, Patrick Reineck, and his staff is excellent too; I'm just being a wimp. Thankfully I haven't had a cavity in many years, but I'm being a big wussy because I keep putting off going to have it taken care of. It's getting more and more painful though, so I know I'm going to have to break down and make an appointment. I might as well get it over with this week if I can - I'm already not looking forward to drill weekend this coming weekend - I love seeing everyone, it just makes for a long few weeks without a day off - I know, I know, I've got that government worker mentality going on :-) - if I get the dentist and drill over with this week and weekend, then I can look forward to enjoying another month before I have to drill again. That drill will really be fun - NOT - because we've a Unit Compliance Inspection going on - yippee! I'll really need a beer after that . . .

A Lovely Day Off

I had decided to make it a four day weekend and boy was I glad. This turned out to be a beautiful day. After an already fun weekend, including an awesome family graduation party, today was spent sleeping in and watching chick flicks (Love Actually and Notting Hill). Then I decided to take a dip in the condo pool. Now mind you, the pool is about the size of a postage stamp, (and each of the 30 units spent $50 to get new pool furniture - must be inlaid with gold or something) but it was cool and refreshing and I was the only one in it. I'm reading an enlightening book entitled For the Love of God, Handbook for the Spirit. It includes writings from The Dalai Lama, Mother Teresa, Barbara De Angelis and many others, and it was sent to me while serving in Iraq --- did I mention I procrastinate from time to time? Anyway, I've actually taken the time to do some reading instead of so much TV watching, and this has been delightful. The only fly in the ointment was that I had difficulty actually getting inside the fence of the pool. The key the condo association provided would go into the lock, but it wouldn't turn. Now I was determined not to let this ruin my day, so I did what any red blooded American would do. I hopped the fence. No cops came with guns a blazin' so I think I'll be OK, although in the next newsletter, I'll bet somebody puts a "gentle reminder" in to use the key instead of bounding over the fence. The condos have eyes . . .

Monday Monday

Ugh - glad it's over - just finished watching "The Secret" last night about the Law of Attraction and told myself it'll be a good day. Can't believe it's been a few weeks already since I posted last. Sure was a lot easier to post while taking a break during work - faster computer there but probably not what I should be doing during the duty day - hehe. Must get DSL here at home - dial up is toooo slow.

May is flying by - Mother's Day was very nice - went to Mel's Crow's Nest- http://www.anchorsawaymarina.com/crowsnest/ - Love that Place - with the folks and then went for a walk on Catawba Island back in some hiking trails on cemetery road. Other than being just a bit muddy, it was a nice and relaxing walk. We did see some poison ivy along the trail but thankfully none of us got any on our skin. I used to get it so bad that it would drive me crazy.

We've also had a few retirement parties at work in the last couple of weeks. While I love the partying part, I'm very sad to see these people go. We've all been through a lot together and it won't be the same there without them. There are so many young kids coming up through the ranks and so many of those (to whom I was a protege) leaving that I'm realizing that I am now becoming one of the old farts in the unit. It doesn't seem possible that I've been in the military for nearly twenty years. I remember stepping on the plane to leave for basic training as if it were just yesterday. April 4th, 1988 - kids in the unit now weren't even born then - oh my gosh - I'm OLD!

Tomorrow is my sister Lisa's birthday - woo who - hope her present gets there on time. Each time I have a deadline for something I wait until the absolute last minute to get it done. It's a wonder I survived high school much less college. I am a total crammer when it comes to studying. The only trouble is, I can't cram like I used to. For the first hour or two my mind is still trying to wrap around the fact that I'm actually using it again . . . Tomorrow I have to take my Operations Management Journeyman Career Development Course Exam. It consists of three books containing military and civil engineering "stuff". And God love the Air Force and Air National Guard. The test I take covers information from an Air Force Program IWIMS that we don't even use in the Air Guard. But to be awarded my AFSC - Air Force Speciality Code, I have to take the test on that program. Thankfully they waivered my formal school or I'd have spent six weeks at some Air Force Base learning stuff I'd never be using. It is actually good for my brain, I guess, to try to comprehend new concepts, but I'd much rather be spending the day off doing something more fun. And whose fault is this anyway? Ummmm - let's see - I've had four months to read, study and learn this stuff and I'm doing it the day before the test - hmmm - guess it's my own fault . . .

I'm posting when I should be studying - another attempt to fend off the inevitable. I must study! If I keep finding other things to do, I'll be pulling an all-nighter just to squeak by on this test - wonder what the minimum passing score is? Yep, I think I'll be a minimalist on this one.
Speaking of finding anything else to do to keep from studying, I think I just figured out how to actually put a link in a post - let's try . . .

http://www.lauriedoll.blogspot.com

too cool - it works - but now I've noticed it put 7:15am in as the time I posted. It's like thinking I'm on Pacific Time. I need to figure out how to fix that. But no, I've GOT TO STUDY - OK, I'm turning the computer off now . . .

Coach's Autograph

Coach's Autograph
Originally uploaded by kruzer69.

As if the trip weren't perfect enough, I was flying back last evening from Phoenix to Chicago and I had had a few beers at the airport (imagine that). Anyway, there was only about an hour left in the flight and I was sitting towards the front of the airplane. They allowed us to use the first class restrooms and guess who I saw when I returned? Yep, Mike Ditka! I went back to my seat and was all excited. The guy in the row in front of me said he'd been at the gate for a few hours before the flight. That guy got his autograph and a picture with him. See, if I hadn't had that last beer in the bar, I'd have probably been able to "meet" him and get a picture with him. Arghh - I have to pay more attention when I'm traveling. Well, since I'm the HUGEST Bear's fan, I called for the flight attendant and asked if he'd have Coach sign my business card. He DID!!!!!! Too Cool!

I'm a happy girl --- didn't get home 'til 2:15am so I'm very jet-lagged and somewhat "out of it", but I'm a very happy girl!

Sisters Laughing

Sisters Laughing
Originally uploaded by kruzer69.

As if class wasn't fun enough, my Sister was able to come to Phoenix for a few days.
